Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
How Powerball Works
A standard Powerball play consists of five different white-ball numbers from 1 through 69 and one red Powerball number from 1 through 26. Players can select their own numbers or have numbers generated randomly.
To win the jackpot, a ticket must match all five white balls plus the red Powerball. There are nine prize tiers in total, so tickets can also win prizes without matching every number.

Prize amounts can differ in California, where non-jackpot prizes are calculated on a pari-mutuel basis.
What Is Power Play?
Power Play is an optional feature that generally costs an additional $1 per play. A multiplier of 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or, when available, 10X can increase most non-jackpot prizes.
Matching all five white balls without the Powerball normally pays $1 million. With Power Play, that prize becomes $2 million regardless of the multiplier drawn. Power Play does not multiply the jackpot.
The 10X Power Play multiplier is available only when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less.
Powerball Jackpot: Cash vs. Annuity
Powerball jackpot winners generally have a choice between an annuity and a one-time cash payment.
The advertised jackpot is the annuity value. The annuity is paid through 30 graduated payments over 29 years. The cash option is the amount of money in the jackpot prize pool required to fund that annuity and is therefore lower than the advertised jackpot.
Both options are before applicable taxes.
